After a nice breakfast at the B&B we headed to the city of Agrigento where Genevieve had an appointment for the Covid test she needed to get back into the US. We found the little office where they were doing the tests and it was very Sicilian. Hot, confused people and an almost total lack of technology. Genevieve took her test and we waited for the results which were thankfully negative. They had to print the results because they didn’t have a way to email them!
Then we headed to the Valle dei Templi , the ruins of seven ancient Greek temples constructed between the 6th and 5th centuries BC. This site is as extensive as the Acropolis in Greece, which makes sense because Sicily was part of Greece at the time and its location made it very strategically important. The ruins were cool and it wasn’t too crowded or too hot so pretty ideal. We spent a couple of hours walking around the site and that pretty much allowed us to see everything.
Next we went to a nearby pizza parlor for a late lunch. Most of the new part of Agrigento is like modern-ish city streets with strip-mall type buildings, and this pizza parlor was in one of these. But the pizza was very good. We returned to our B&B and then went out to the rocky beach to hang out. Lots of garbage on the beach unfortunately but Agrigento is kind of working class so that adds up. Went back to the B&B and cleaned up and went to a Japanese restaurant which was very welcome as a break from the usual Sicilian specialties. They didn’t have Poke Nachos but they did have little Poke tacos so that was cool. A woman at a nearby table (who wasn’t eating at all and was very thin and that concerned me) was apparently listening to our lively (loud) American discussion over dinner. We left the restaurant at the same time as her and she asked where we were from (very friendly, they’re loud in Sicily too so no worries there). We told her California and she was like “ooooh”. They don’t get many Americans in Agrigento and the ones they do get are from the East Coast so I think she couldn’t place our accent. Glad to help! Anyhow she said welcome to Agrigento and I hope you have a nice time. Sicilians do be friendly.
Then we went back to the B & B because we had an early morning. Somehow in the middle of the night Mark “fell” out of bed but I distinctly remember him saying “wahhhh…” right before he launched himself onto the floor so I think it was more like a really active dream. It’s hard not to laugh when your husband is hurting but it was so funny!
