A family on the move

Trip Home

Thursday, August 17th, 2012

One thing about taking a trip this long, you’re ready to go home at the end of vacation! The apartment manager was coming at 8:30 to check us out and then call us a cab to the airport. We got up and packed up and when he arrived, I asked if he wanted the leftover food we had. The only thing he’d take was the truffle cheese, and it seemed such a shame to throw everything else away. So I took it with the garbage downstairs hoping to find someone to give it to. There was an older woman smoking on her doorstep so I asked her if she wanted it (it was two bags of things like eggs, bread, yogurt, cereal, etc). She didn’t speak English so I tried to convey what I meant with arm gestures (“we are going away” as I pointed to the sky) until she finally said “for me?!” and took the bags. Yay! Genevieve was laughing as we walked back to the apartment, she said it looked like I was an angel ready to fly off into the sky again..

We got the cab to the airport, and then checked our bags. Only one bag per passenger on American, so our tote was extra but silly us we didn’t think quickly enough and instead of just carrying on one of the girls tiny wheely bags we paid extra to check the fifth bag. It was an uneventful flight to NYC and then uneventful on the way back to San Francisco where Mamama very kindly picked us up. Good to be home!
