Black Orchid and the Trip Home

Thursday, August 17th, 2017

We left the Phoenix and took their car the short distance to the boat dock. This time we got a much less crowded ferry-like boat and the journey back was very pleasant. We were met by our driver to take us to the Black Orchid Resort, which is a cute enough place but you’re trapped without a car needing to eat in their wildly overpriced restaurant. But we made the best of it, playing in their pool and looking at the river. And the nicest thing was at night all the toads come out to catch the flies that gather around the lights of the restaurant. The Belizeans were very amused that we liked the toads but I grew up with them in Sacramento and they’re scarce in California now so it was fun to play with them.

We booked a tour with the hotel to go to the Belize Zoo. Another family joined us, they had young kids. The zoo was nice and our guide was great. He was a little disappointed at our standard reaction to the tapir’s “fifth leg”, but really the male tapir was using his penis as a fly swatter it was so big and we’d never seen anything like it!

We had to get up super early for our transport to the airport. Lots of people were flying out the same time as us so we were in a standard bus. The airport was buzzing with travelers but we all made it and had an uneventful trip home.
