The Roving Richards

A family on the move

Trip Home from Ireland

Thursday, March 21, 2024

We had a decent night’s sleep and got up and had breakfast at the new breakfast room which was far nicer than the moody nightclub room we ate in last time. Of course today it decided to be sunny. It’s always sunny the day you leave. We took the shuttle bus to the airport and tried to check in using the machine but of course, the printer decided to jam while printing my luggage tag and it took, no lie, about 15 minutes for someone to finally come over and help us (we couldn’t just check in on another machine because they had us down as checked in but with no luggage tag we couldn’t move forward). The guy who finally did help was at least nice and quick. We went through security with no problem and I bought some duty-free whisky to complete the gift we’d gotten for our dog sitter. While we were there Mark noticed this other whiskey with a toad on the label so I circled back around and got that too. Then we walked and walked and walked to the US gates. This time they didn’t make us go back through security I guess because the Irish had upped their security game with spiffy new scanners. Then a short wait in the customs line where again, they did not do my Global Entry interview. I think they should just take this airport off the list of places where they do interviews because they clearly do not.

Once we got near the gate I started walking in circles to get my 10,000k steps to keep my step streak. Mark got something to eat and I went and got a scone for later just in case the food on the plane wasn’t good. I got my steps and made the controversial decision to not take my contacts out. Don’t tell my eye doctor. But it was way better, I really can’t see in glasses and it was just so much nicer. I actually read an entire book Charlotte had given me from the free library in her dorm that was clearly someone’s class assignment but it was good. The food was in fact not good so I asked for the tray without the main entree and ate my scone instead and then the salad that was surprisingly good as well as the dessert. The time went by much faster on the way back probably because of the book and because I could see.

When we arrived at SFO the luggage as usual took forever to come out. We walked to the place where you get an Uber and it was pouring rain! I guess we brought it with us. Got an Uber and I was a bit annoyed at the guy because he didn’t have a FasTrak so we couldn’t use the carpool lane even though we had three people. He was based out of Salinas so I kind of get it but I feel like Uber drivers should have a FasTrak just for this reason. And then he went home the strangest way which also wasn’t his fault but I was cranky anyway. Once home the cats were glad to see us! We unpacked etc., and then I went to bed before the dog sitter dropped Sookie off because I just couldn’t stay up any longer. And then it took over a week to readjust to the time, always so much harder on the way home!
