The Roving Richards

A family on the move

Puerto Jimenez 2023

The fine folks at Bosque del Cabo took us directly to our AirBnB, a house right on the water with the gate that says “Osa Outfitters”. We had actually passed that building many times before (down the street from the now closed Italian restaurant, Il Giardino, the girls loved) so it’s funny we were staying there now. The host was super nice and we got a nice tour of the place (rooftop pool!) and settled in. We walked to the grocery store for supplies for breakfast and enjoyed the flock of parrots roosting in the trees all around our place at dusk. Man, they are so loud. These groups fly in and then decide no, that’s not the right tree, and fly off, chattering all the while. Eventually they do get settled to. And then we went to Pizzamail.it for dinner, because it really is good.

Earlier we had worked with Charles, our host, to book a few tours. Today was a chocolate tour at Rancho Raices. We had done a tour twice at Finca Koba and thought it was time to branch out. We can’t get enough of the chocolate. The taxi driver, Arturo, (recommended by Charles) picked us up and we got to the family farm. A very cute place, lots of plants all kind of mixed together in a hodgepodge that is very beneficial as the plants work together to provide nutrients and repel bugs for each other. We got to process the cacao and of course eat it as a fondue thing. And when we were leaving, a group of squirrel monkeys that comes through the property every day passed through. So cute and so close! We really felt like part of the family at the end of the tour. After we returned home we girls went into town for iced coffee and then returned home just as a big storm was starting. So so much for our idea of spending the evening in the rooftop pool!

The day dawned nice and clear, which was good because it was the day of our dolphin tour. Genevieve wasn’t feeling well so she stayed back. The dock was literally in front of our place so that was easy to get to. We had been warned that another family would be joining us and they needed to go into Golfito to do some government paperwork so the adult children could get their residence permits. They were a nice family and we never mind more company. We did see dolphins and then went snorkeling over by the other side of the gulf. It was very pretty but not clear enough to snorkel so I just swam. Once we got to Golfito we walked towards the center of town but honestly, Puerto Jimenez is a better town even if Golfito is the equivalent of the county seat. We did get Genevieve a machete at a hardware store though. Not sure why she wanted it so badly but now she has it.

Charlotte and I were ready to go long before Mark and Genevieve so we headed out to the area where the crocodiles had been so many years before. I was starting to feel a little sick myself but not really enough to slow me down. So no crocodiles but an egret breeding area and Jesus Cristo lizards we were able to make run across water so that was cool.

We got back to our little house and had the pool day we’d been looking forward to ever since we saw the place on the web. Literally spent all day up there drinking sangria and hanging out. And as darkness came we got Mark to join us for the parrot viewing as they decided which of the nearby trees was actually the best.

Our last day on the Osa Peninsula. Always sad to leave. Our trusty taxi driver, Arturo, came to get us in plenty of time and we got to the tiny waiting room and waited for our Sansa flight to San Jose. Got to San Jose and then waited there for our flight to Liberia which was kind of delayed but we made it anyway. Our driver arranged through Costco was waiting and we drove to the Westin Playa Conchal. While we were driving Charlotte attempted to make a dinner reservation for our last night but succeeded only in canceling our dinner reservation for that night. After much stress and recriminations we reached the Westin where we found to our relief they had in fact not cancelled that reservation (I think their phone system and in house system weren’t that synced up which worked to our benefit). We got to our room in time to take a quick walk around the property, see this cute variegated squirrel, and have a nice dinner at Faisanella.
